How to calculate square footage

Multiply length by width for each rectangle, then add the rectangles together.

Square feet = length (ft) × width (ft)
Square yards = square feet ÷ 9  ·  Square meters = square feet × 0.0929

Example: a 12 × 10 ft bedroom plus a 10 × 8 ft closet area

12 × 10 = 120 square feet, and 10 × 8 = 80 square feet, for 200 square feet in total (22.2 square yards, 18.6 square meters). With 10% extra for cuts, buy 220 square feet of flooring. At $4 per square foot that's $880.

How much extra flooring to buy

Planks and tiles get cut at walls and doorways, and some pieces have defects. Add about 10% for a standard layout and 15% for diagonal or patterned layouts. Keep a box of leftovers for future repairs.

Frequently asked questions

How do I measure an L-shaped room?
Split it into two rectangles, measure each one, and enter them as Area 1 and Area 2. The calculator adds them for you.
How many square feet are in a box of flooring?
It varies by product, commonly 15 to 30 square feet per box for vinyl plank and laminate. Divide the 'flooring to buy' figure by the coverage printed on the box and round up.
How do I convert square feet to square meters?
Multiply square feet by 0.0929. The calculator shows both.
